Some SEO methods such as keyword research are legitimate ways in promoting your site, these are referred to as “white hat” methods, and there are other ways to promote your site that a less ethical, these methods are called “black hat”.

In search engine optimisation, why cant we all just get along?

In search engine optimisation, why cant we all just get along?

Black hat methods of SEO can result in a negative impact on your site and can even result in a total ban on your site in the search engines.  This of course is not good.  Most black hat SEO methods are good for a short term fix however more times that naught they will end up raising a flag on your site to Google and the rest stating that your site has tried to unethically game their system.

Once you understand that there are good methods of SEO and bad methods of SEO you can begin to know the sort of techniques that are best to avoid.

Don’t Move a Page That Already Has PageRank

When you move a web page from one location to another URL, you will be in danger of losing the PageRank of that specific page.  For more information what PageRank is go here, In short, it is authority and you will understand that it is a pretty important thing for your site to have.

Don’t Have Any Link Exits As It Can Reduce Conversion Rates

Don’t create a page on your site that doesn’t have a link going to another page on your domain.  The major search engines love internal linking structure and by not doing this you are missing out on a relatively easy way to optimise your site.

Do Not Keyword Stuff Your Page

Keyword stuffing is when an owner of a site will cram in as many keywords as possible onto a page in the hopes that it will rank for those terms.  This technique used to work back in the beginnings of the net but now this technique will results in your site being banned from all the major search engines index.

Hidden Links & Text Is An SEO No No!

This is another sure fire way of getting your site de-indexed.  Make sure all links on your pages are visible and make sure the text you use in the content is clear and readable to the human eye.  Not doing so will defiantly raise the red flag and get your site penalised.

Linking Out To Bad Sites Is Poor Internet Marketing Practice

Whenever you create an external link that goes from your site to another, always make sure that the domain you are pointing the link to is a high quality site that has a similar theme as yours and will hopefully complement your visitors.

Unnatural Links Will Harm Your SEO Campaign

If you really want to see a good benefit from receiving links, make sure that you are getting them from relevant web pages with unique high quality content on them.  This will give you a much bigger advantage to that of a link pointing to your site from a link page with little to no relevance.

Make sure you don’t use the same text with all incoming links

Don’t use the same name in your links that point back to your site.  We can use this site as an example of what this means.  If we had a bunch of links pointing to this site that said “Edinburgh SEO Services” then this would seem unnatural.  Instead it is better to have variation in the keywords used, ideally links coming in that said such things as “SEO in Edinburgh”, “Internet Marketing In Edinburgh”, “SEO Agency Edinburgh” and so on, would give much better benefit that just using the same term over and over again.  We will talk more on this type of links in a later post.

  • ~ Mike Burman (Owner, Mayfield Interiors Ltd)

Mayfield Interiors"Edinburgh SEO Services have been providing search engine optimisation for my website since the end of last year.  At that time my website was indexed too far down in the search engines to ever be found by anyone using even the most popular keywords “kitchens edinburgh” and “bathrooms edinburgh” to find my website.  Since then, my site has been making fast progress  through the search engines with a large variety of keywords and now can be found very near the top of the first page of Google and other search engines for these important keywords.

I have been very impressed with Edinburgh SEO Services professionalism and fast response to my email queries.  Because my business relies heavily from enquiries through my website, it is very important that I choose the right SEO company and Edinburgh SEO Services have certainly delivered.  I would happily recommend them to anyone looking for SEO."
